Description
Summary:Acacia hybrid is the cross over between two parent Acacia species which is Acacia mangium and Acacia auriculiformis. Acacia mangium is a native tree of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia whereas Acacia auriculiformis is a native tree to Papua New Guinea, Northern Australia and Indonesia. In 1971, the first hybrid of Acacia mangium ,. and Acacia auriculifonnis was discovered near Ulu Kukut Plantation in north-western Sabah, Malaysia. The aim of this study was to determine the physical and mechanical properties of small clear method at the air-dry condition of glued laminated Acacia hybrid of Sarawak. Glulam measuring 2 cm by 2 cm by 6 cm in thickness, width, and length, respectively, was made with two layers of different age which is 7 with 10 years, 10 with 13 year and 13 with 7 years of Acaci hybrid. Meanwhile, the physical properties detennination referred to the density and moisture of the Acacia hybrid. As for the mechanical strength, the properties that look into is the hardness. It was found out that the hardness of age combination 10 with 13 years is the highest. The mean value of the density for age 7 with 10 is 675.957 kg/m3, while for age 10 with 13 years and 13 with 7 years is 710.183 kg/m3 and 697.307 kg/m3 respectively. This indicated that Acacia Hybrid can be said that fall in the categorised of the Light Hardwood timber according to the Malaysia Grading Rules 1984. The moisture content of the laminated Acacia hybrid age 7 with 10, 10 with 13 and 13 with 7 years are 14.945%, 14.274% and 13.748% respectively.
