Isolation and Identification of Cellobiose Utilizing Yeasts from Local Fruits Surfaces

The production of fuel ethanol has become crucial among the industrial field as fossil fuels is decreasing over time. Bioethanol is an alternative for fossil fuels as it is environmentally friendly fuel. The current practice to produce ethanol usually require a fermentative organism such as Saccharo...

Bioethanol is an alternative for fossil fuels as it is environmentally friendly fuel. The current practice to produce ethanol usually require a fermentative organism such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, cellobiose fermenting yeasts from local fruits surfaces were isolated on modified YM broth and YM agar. Molecular works such as DNA extraction, agarose gel electrophoresis and Polymerase Chain Reaction using 26S primer were performed to identify the cellobiose fermenting yeasts. From the DNA sequencing results, there are two cellobiose fermenting yeasts, Meyerozyma guilliermondii and Candida tropicalis were identified. This study has demonstrated that cellobiose fermenting yeasts are present on local fruit surfaces.
