Description
Summary:Plectranthus amboinicus have many medicinal uses such as to treat inflammatory diseases or swelling symptoms. However, data on antibacterial properties of P. amboinicus is very limited. This research was carried out to investigate the antibacterial properties of P. amboinicus leaf by using maceration and Soxhlet extraction. The solvent used were aqueous, ethanol and hexane. The antibacterial activities of P. amboinicus leaf extract were determined through well diffusion method. The Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The surface of the agar had been streaked with streaked test bacteria. Each concentration of the leaf extract (100 mg/mL, 50 mg/mL, 1Omg/mL & 5mg/mL), negative and positive control were impregnated into the cavity of the agar. After incubated for one day, the zone inhibition was measured. Hexane was found to be the most effective solvent towards all the bacteria either through maceration or Soxhlet extraction technique with the largest zone inhibition of 31.33 mm. Thus, this research had provided preliminary results suggesting that P. amboinicus can be used as a source of drugs to fight infection.
