Due to the increase of bacterial resistance towards certain antibiotics, it had reduced the efficiency of current antibacterial treatments. Hence, a feasible approach needs to be done by finding more efficient drugs to treat and control the infections that caused by the pathogenic bacteria. Several studies also had reported that chalcone can possess the anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and insecticidal activities. In this study, instead of using chalcone, bischalcone derivatives had been applied as the new options of antibiotics in order to study the antibacterial activity against the Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria such as Escherichia coli Ol 57:H7, Vibrio cholerae, Bacillus cereus and Listeria monocytogenes. The anti-bacterial activity of the bis-chalcone derivatives showed that TMH 1044 compound portrayed the lowest minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) for all the strains tested. Three tested compounds such as 1,3-Bis Hydroxychalcone, 1,4-Bis Hydroxychalcone and TMH I 044 showed anti-bacterial properties. The results showed that most of the compounds are more efficient in killing Gram positive bacteria compared to Gram negative bacteria. The antibacterial activity of the bis chalcone compound is conducted using Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test based on micro-dilution method and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) test. Therefore, the application of bis- chalcone derivatives in this study were useful as the future alternative especially in anti-bacterial treatment to control the infections caused by the pathogenic bacteria.
