Summary:Rhetoric is an art that applies beautiful language either in oral or written communication aims to influence the target audience and convince the listener to support a particular point of view as well as take certain actions. This study was conducted to examine the text of Tun Mahathir bin Mohamad’s political speech in terms of rhetorical use techniques and frequency of rhetorical strategies applies using Aristotle’s rhetorical proofs of ethos, pathos and logos as the theoretical framework. The platform of youtube has been chosen to collect six political speech in Malay language and transcribe it to be used as data in this study. About 429 excerpts containing rhetorical elements were collected and analysed by using qualitative methods of content analysis. The results show that Tun Mahathir has applied all the rhetoric in his speech. Most of the speech uses ethos at the introductory section to appeal for the credibility that he is a well-known person among the public. For pathos, the elements of “feeling, needs, values and desires” are most used to evoke the emotions of the audience. Logos rhetoric is a type of speech that conveyed information based on facts or evidence so that the audience understands the current phenomena and accepts the points presented. The Findings have shows that logos have more domain been utilized in political speech while ethos is less prominent.
