Linguistics The usage of slangs in this era have become more widespread especially in films. This linguistic study is done in the aspects of Semantics. This study aims to analyse the usage of connotative meanings for slangs used in films. The selected films chosen are Malaysian gangster themed. This research uses qualitative methods which include observation and library access. For the data, 5 films were selected to look into the usage of slangs implemented. 25 words were selected to be analysed to achieve this research's objective. The usage of the analysed slangs are used dif erently in all the films selected for this research. From the findings of this study, the usage of slangs differ in connotative and literal meaning. Literal meanings for all the selected words can be referred to the Ka mus Dewan dictionary. The slangs used in these films commonly originate from gangster groups. In addition to that, the slangs used from these groups originate from the English Language. This study also discovers that slangs used by the gangsters groups have mutual intelligibility with affiliating gangster organizations. Initially, the slangs that were used provided a positive literal meaning, however it has since been changed to portray a negative meaning among the register of gangsters. This study also revealed that the usage of slang is very extensive as not only are gangsters implementing this use of language, but also the youths who have started using these slangs as often nowadays.
