TOXICITY AND ANTI-TERMITIC POTENTIAL OF ORGANOTIN(IV) COMPLEXES AGAINST Coptotermes curvignathus SPECIES OF TERMITES

Coptotermes curvignathus is one of the major pests in oil palm plantation. The primary termite species capable of killing oil palm was C. curvignathus (Rhinotermitidae). Immature palms were killed as a result of feeding damage to the apical meristem at the base of the spear, while mature oil palm we...

The primary termite species capable of killing oil palm was C. curvignathus (Rhinotermitidae). Immature palms were killed as a result of feeding damage to the apical meristem at the base of the spear, while mature oil palm were killed as a result of the damage to the trunk, in which the termites sometimes nested. Furthermore, C. curvignathus also pest of important agricultural crop such as sugar-cane, rubber trees, and forest plantation trees. Synthetic termicides have been used for a long time. But soon it was realized that chlorinated, persistent type of insecticides posed a great hazard to environment. Due to organotin(IV) compound had the potential to be developed as the insecticides to overcome the environmental problem. The 2,4-dihydroxy benzophenone ligand (1) and the organotin(IV) complexes like dimethyltin(IV) complex (2) and diphenyltin(IV) complex (3) have been used in this research and apply to C. curvignathus species. The C. curvignathus species were collected at FELCRA Berhad Sungai Sui oil palm area and it’s were tested for seven days with 2,4-dihydroxy benzophenone ligand (1) and two different organotin(IV) complexes at different concentration. Diphenynltin(IV) complex, 1% concentration has the highest mortality rate.
