Summary:In this study, we produced ethanol from sago hampas (Metroxylon sagu) that had underwent alkaline explosion pretreatment, because, the biomass recalcitrance limits the microbial degradation as well as the biogas production from these types of materials. Both treated and untreated sago hampas, which acted as the substrates for the production of ethanol were studied in the fermentation process using ethanologens, Escherichia coli KOi i. Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) was performed to utilize the enzymatic bond breaking of the sago hampas into fermentable sugar in order to produce ethanol. Samples were analysed via High Performance Liquid Chromatogrphy (HPLC), DNS reducing sugar assay and phenolsuphuric total carbohydrate assay. Upon analysis, ethanol productions for both treated and untreated samples increased starting from O hr onward. From the result obtained, when 1.0% treated sago hampas was used as the substrate for SSF, it produced the highest ethanol yield at 120 hr which is 57.1.0%. Thus, pretreated sago hampas had high potential to become an alternative substrate for ethanol production.
