Bosser and Polygala senega Linneaus that have potential medicinal purposes. The aspects of studies included systematic and preliminary analysis of the essential oiL The presence of essential oil in N cadamba was primarily detected through the presence of the aromatic smell in the petiole. For the P. senega, strong aromatic smell was evident when the roots were crushed. The smell of essential oil from both species was quite similar. The materials and methods in this study included sample collection, herbarium specimen preservations, essential oil extraction and preliminary analysis of organic compound from the extract. The preliminary analysis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) showed that N cadamba contained Methyl salicylate and Caryophyllene. Seven organic compounds here identify in herbaceous plant, P. senega, namely Methyl salicylate, Caryophyllene, Methyl 4-methoxysalicylate, Menthol, Benzoic acid, Eugenol and Benzyl benzoate. Comparatively P. senega possessed more organic compound than N cadamba but both species shared common compound namely Methyl salicylate and Caryophyllene. The findings of two compounds in both species were the first time reported. Further studies on the quantification of the compound should be carried out and the potential of using these compound towards the development of medicinal uses. The material extraction for N cadamba is of potential since it is identified as one of the agroforestry fast growing species and has been planted in the experimental plot in Sarawak. For P. senega, it is commonly found in cleared areas and cultivation of this species is ofgreat potential.
