Description
Summary:An unnamed Schefflera species found in Mount Kinabalu was used in this study. Based on previous study, this species could be a potential natural hybrid species. The sample of this species that was previously collected was used for this study. To determine the putative parents of this species, DNA was extracted, amplified, cloned and reamplified using internal transcribed spacer region before it was sent for sequencing. The sequences were aligned and analysed using Maximum Parsimony and Maximum Likelihood. The result suggested that Schefflera sp. could be a hybrid species and Schefflera sp.2 is one of the potential parents for Schefflera sp. Schefflera pachyphlebia, Schefflera sp.3 and Schefflera sp.4 could be the another parent but strong conclusions still cannot be made since most of the taxa in the clade are not resolved. More data on this species and its potential parents are needed to confirm this.
