Fisheries at Kuching Wetland National Park, Matang, Sarawak

This study was conducted to determine the current fisheries status and list of commercial species at Kuching Wetland National Park mangrove area, Matang, Sarawak. Five stations were randomly selected in the study area. Gill net, cast net and hooks and lines were used. A total of 288 individuals of fish and a total of 26 crustaceans were caught. These individuals belong to 24 species of fish from 22 families and 5 species of crustacean from 3 families. Majority of the species that were caught have commercial value. Juvenile's fishes were abundance in study site which consist of marine migrant and estuaries species. The presence of large number of small sized of fish caught showed the importance of mangrove as nursery as well as refuge and feeding areas for a wide variety of aquatic organism which support fisheries activities either direct or indirectly.
