An attempt to detect avian encephalomyelitis virus among unvaccinated village chickens in Kuching division, Sarawak

Five districts in Kuching Division, Sarawak namely, Bau, Batu Kawa, Siburan, Bako and Lundu were chosen and ten unvaccinated village chickens were randomly taken from villages in each of the district for AEV detection. Specific and sensitive reverse transeriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-peR) assay was used for the detection of avian encephalomyelitis virus (AEV) ribonucleic acid (RNA). 5'UTR peR primers were used to amplify the 5'untranslated region (UTR) of AEV genome. An AEV-specific 494 base pair cDNA product was amplified by these pimers from positive control but no products were amplified from all of the clinical samples. The results suggested that RT-peR provided a specific and sensitive approach for identification of AEV isolates.
