Phylogenetic analyses of the schismatoglottis asperata complex (Araceae : Schismatoglottideae)

Schismalogloltis Clsperala complex consists of at least 14 species , ecologically (notably in terms of restricted distributions) well defined but rath er crypti ca lly mor ph ologically distincti ve. One of the main problems is that virtually all previous research has focused on herbarium specimens...

One of the main problems is that virtually all previous research has focused on herbarium specimens to the exclusion of li ving plants and critical field obse rvati ons, therefore their morphological distinctions, which are only observable in the living plants, has not been th oroughly understood. Thi, study focused on the li ving collection of S. asperata complex based at the Semenggoh Botanical Research Centre with the intention of conducting an phylogenetic investigation using molecular data to resolve th e intemal relationship among the putati ve species and to subsequently aMempt morphologica l mapping onto the resultant topologies. The mOIK regions of chloropl ast DNA (cpDNA) of S. osperala complex were sequenced for multiple sequence ali g.nment and phylogenetic tree construction was inferred. The tree formed has moderate bootstrap support (60BP), containing two clades, one with strong boostrap support (86B P) and another with moderate support (nBP). Th e internal relationship of several spec ies was remained unresolved.
