Description
Summary:This study was carried out in order to document the reproductive biology of horseshoe crabs, Tachypleus gigas and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda at Kampung Pasir Putih, Sarawak. The body measurement and sex ratio of the horseshoe crabs, T. gigas and C.rotudicauda were determined by analysing sample collected between August and December. The histological methods were applied to analyse the egg appearances of both T.gigas and C.rotundicauda. The overall sex ratio was found to be 1:1 (male:females) for T.gigas and 2.6 :1 (male:female) for C. rotundicauda. The reproductive biology study shows the result of fecundity with mean value of 4619±2852 eggs for T.gigas and mean value of 2300±1349 for C.rotundicauda. The egg size of C.rotundicauda was found was found to much smaller than T.gigas with mean diameter of egg for T.gigas was 2.22± 0.53 mm while mean diameter of C.rotundicauda was 1.93±0.37 mm. The mean diameter of egg for both species, T.gigas and C.rotundicauda were higher in September with mean value of 3.1±0.3 mm and 2.2±0.2 mm respectively. The information that gained from this study can be used for better conservation management to prevent the population of horseshoe crabs decline in future.
