Description
Summary:The objective of this research is to assess the performance of biofilter in treating greywater in Unimas. The biotiiter use are sand biofi lter and samples are taken at three points; sources, sprayer in the biofi Iter, and the pond. Biofilter is a filter use to remove organic compound that may present in the greywater. Greywater is the water that come from the residential such as hand basin. shower, washing machine and many more except from the toilet. Greywater contain chemicals such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and ammonia, bacteria such as E.coli. also particle of din, sand and food, etc. Many water quality parameter is measured along, but the main measurement of this research is the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). BOD5 is measured using method APHA. 1992. BOD5 of the grey water at the pond decreases by 60% to 70 % after the treatment by biofilter, ranging from 25-27 mgll decreases to 10-12 mg/l. Other parameters that is also measured are the chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solid, nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, phosphorus contain, total coliform co unt and E.coli count. Statistical Package for Social Science 15 (SPSS 15) is used to analyse (he results at different points of sampling.
