Diversity and Density of Birds in Bau, Lundu and Serian Sarawak, Malaysia

Studies conducted in overseas have shown that urbanization alter bird species composition and density. However no studies have been done in Borneo where avifauna diversity is inherently high. This study was conducted in Bau, Lundu and Serian and the aims are to determined and compare species diversity of birds, estimate density, determine the similarity and shared species of birds and determine the microhabitat used by birds. A total of 2,103 birds were observed, representing 17 families and 30 species. Asian Glossy Starling (Aplonis panayensis) and Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) was the most abundant with relative abundances 29.24%, and 25.15%. Birds density estimated at Bau, Lundu and Serian are 37.796, 25.107, 32.654 birds/ha. Zar t-test calculated showed that there is a significant difference in species diversity between Lundu and Serian while there is no significant difference between Bau and Lundu and Bau and Serian. Tree is the most used microhabitat for perching while fence and lamp is less use.
