One of the major environmental concerns associated with landfilling of municipal solid wastes is related to the discharge of leachate into the environment, which may cause serious pollution to groundwater aquifers as well as adjacent surface waters. When waste is deposited in landfill it is necessary to contain the leachate using a low permeability liner so that it may be treated before being discharged into the environment. This study desribed the concrete as a liner for the leachate collection pond, leacahte retention pond and the surface impoundments for leachate. The concrete also must have a good structure for safe the leachate from leackage to the groundwater. The most important is the concrete must have low permeability and high of strength. For this study, the concrete will added with quarry dust to give a lower permeability and higher of strength. After doing the laboratory test, the result show that the leachate contaminants can not effect the strength of concrete when it immersion to leachate for 7, 14 and 28 days. The higher value strength is the concrete added with quarry dust for immersion 28 days it is 23.840 MPa that compare to the concrete not added with quarry dust for immersion 28 days it is 20.512 MPa. For the permeability, the lower permeability is the concrete added with quarry dust for immersion 28 days it is 1.02 x 10-12m2/s that compare to the concrete not added with quarry dust for immersion 28days it is 1.04 x 10-12m2/s. Settings are the concrete workability. Workability in the concrete depends on the water/cement ratio. The water/cement ratio will affect the strength and the permeability of concrete. After doing the testing, the good water/cement ratio is 0.6. However, according to the research the leacahte contaminants not affect the strength of concrete for a short term. It also can affect the concrete for a long term it about 45 years above. 2013-01-07T03:53:25Z 2013-01-07T03:53:25Z 2011-04 Learning Object http://hdl.handle.net/123456789/22891 en Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) School of Environmental Engineering |
