Description
Summary:Hatchery-reared Asian seabass. Lates calcarifer were studied to observe the eye development during metamorphosis period. The main objective of this study is to understand the eye development of Asian seabass during metamorphosis period, as eye is the most important sensory organ in this species. Asian seabass have pigmented eyes since larval stage. The vision of Asian seabass larvae improved as the fish grow. During metamorphosis stage, the larvae undergo development and changes in eye structure, retina and visual cells. These changes lead to the increasing of the sharpness of Asian seabass vision. Asian seabass depends more on the temporal region of its retina for vision, which resulting in the thicker temporal region compared to bottom and nasal region. Rod cells developed during metamorphosis period of Asian seabass. Appearance of rod cells could improve the vision of Asian seabass during night time. Therefore, night time feeding for Asian seabass was suggested to decrease fish mortality due to starvation.
