Summary: | The objective of this study is to ascertain the heavy metal contamination levels in muds and soils at Dabong, Kelantan and Royal Belum, Perak and also to determine the range contributions of the areas that affected by floods and anthropogenic factors in the muds and soils contamination. 14 samples (8 muds and 6 soils) of the mud and soil dust with particle sizes below 100 µm of two different environments (Dabong, Kelantan and Royal Belum, Perak) were analysed. The Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) analysis was used to investigate the heavy metal contents. l O elements were identified in each soil sample collected from the study area. Besides, the pollution indices { contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI),} and geo-accumulation index were also used to assess the contamination status of the heavy metals in the mud and soil samples. The elements such as Al, Ba, Mn, Mo, Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Cd were found to be mostly of anthropogenic origins. The contamination at the study area can be classified from moderate to considerable contamination. The relative abundance of the elements in the mud possible due to the flood affected areas in Dabong is in order of Al>Mn>Ba>Zn>Pb>Cu>Cr>Ni>Cd>Mo. whereas Royal Belum the relative abundance of the elements in the soil possible due to anthropogenic influences is in order of Al>Ba>Cr>Mn>Pb>Zn>Ni>Mo>Cu>Cd. |
