Leucaena leucacephala biomass treated with Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate(SDBS) as adsorbent for Dye (Congo Red) from contaminated water

The inappropriate disposal of dyes in wastewater constitutes an enviromnental problem and can cause damage to the ecosystem. Synthetic dyes are difficult to remove due to their complex structure. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the adsorption of dye (Congo Red) by using Leucae...

Synthetic dyes are difficult to remove due to their complex structure. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the adsorption of dye (Congo Red) by using Leucaena leucocephala biomass as adsorbent. Leucaena leucocephala is the fast growing species has use as an adsorbent for removal of Congo Red in the aqueous solution. Adsorbent were treated with Sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) obtain biosorbent with increased adsorption capacity. Batch adsorption and equilibrium experiments were conducted to study the influence of different parameters such as the effects of concentration, contact time, temperature, pH, adsorbent size and adsorbent dosage on biosorption evaluated. Langmuir and Freundlich were used to analyse the equilibrium data. The results showed that adsorption rate of adsorbent attain equilibrium at 20 ppm of dye concentration, 60 minutes of contact at temperature of 30 ᶿc, pH4, adsorbent size 0.425 mm - 0.150 mm and dosage of adsorbent 2.5 g. The result for isothermic studies showed that both isotherms model, Langmuir and Freundlich were fitted Well as the coefficient value, R2 close to 1. 2016 Undergraduate Final Project Report NonPeerReviewed Zafirah Mohd Nawawi (2016) Leucaena leucacephala biomass treated with Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate(SDBS) as adsorbent for Dye (Congo Red) from contaminated water.
