Description
Summary:The increment in number on cancer case yearly shows that it is necessary to find a new drug. Thus, the present study was conducted to investigate the potential of methanol extract of Acanthus ilicifolius (Jeruju Putih) by determining toxicity using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) and antioxidant activity using DPPH Assay. The chemical profile of the sample also has done using Thin Layer Chromatography methodology with visualization method of Ferric Chloride. From the BSLT, LC₅₀ of the extract is unable to obtain since the highest percentage of mortality is below 50. However with a best fit line graph the value is estimated to be 1153 μg/mL. As for control gallic acid was used where it give the value of LC₅₀= 451.2 μg/mL The scavenging activity is determined to give the value of IC₅₀ = 29.87 μg/mL which was compared with ascorbic acid that tested as standard which showed an IC₅₀ = 4.57 μg/mL. The chemical profile using TLC on silica gel proposed that the extract contain phcnols compound. Within one trial using three type of mobile phase; (1) methanol, (2) 1:1, methanol:ethyl acetate, (3) ethyl acetate, the Rf value obtained were 0.52, 0.66 and 0.64 respectively. The positive responds of the extract on the test show that the extract has the potential as an anticancer. Further isolation of the compound is recommended for more finding.
