Description
Summary:The study area is located towards the southern part of Temangan town in Machang district, Kelantan. The area is bounded by longitude 102° 7' 40" E to 102° 10' 31" E and latitude 5° 42' 28" N to 5° 39' 53" N covering an area of 25 km2. The study area consists of alluvium, Temangan Ignimbrite dyke, Tanah Merah Vocanic, Taku Schist Formation and Telong Formation. The main purpose of this study is to examine the general geology and petrography of the rock units. About 10 samples of rock taken in this study area were examined under polarized microscope to determine the composition of minerals. As the result of mapping, geological map with updated data was produced. Petrography study of Ignimbrite shows the minerals composition of quartz (20-25%), alkali feldspar (25-30%), muscovite (5-10%), chlorite (5-10%) and cristobalite (10-15%) and tuff matrix (20-25%). Minerals in andesite composed of plagioclase phenocrysts (15-20%), plagioclase laths groundmass (55-60%), oxides minerals (10-15%), secondary mineral of sericite (5-10%) and pyroxene (5-10%). Fine-grained sandstone was classifying as lithic subarkose which contain quartz (58%), feldspar (21%) and rock fragments (21%). The quartz mica schist was named by the composition of quartz (25-30%), biotite (30-35%) and muscovite (30-35%) in schist rock. The study of Temangan area produced updated geological map with detail petrographic analysis of the rock units found.
