Description
Summary:Nowadays, the energy crisis and global warming due to the rapid increase in industrialisation are the issues that make biofuel appeared. Bioethanol has been identified as the most used biofuel worldwide since it significantly contributes to the reduction of crude oil consumption and environmental pollution. In order to select the process that is cost effective, lignocellulosic biomass has been the primary choice for bioethanol. The aim of this research is to produce bioethanol from agriculture waste which is mangosteen peel through separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) process with the aid of pretreatment. Glucose is the predominant sugar component in mangosteen peel. Therefore, it can be converted into reducing sugars which are important for bioethanol production. The methods used are acid and alkaline pretreatment process, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, distillation and finally obtaining the concentration of bioethanol by using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis. In the hydrolysis process, enzyme cellulase from Aspergillus niger is used while Saccharomyces cerevisae and Escherichia coli are used in fermentation process. After the sample undergoes High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) test, Saccharomyces cerevisae shows the highest concentration of bioethanol produces which is 38.17% in alkaline condition. Thus, this proves that mangosteen peel is able to produce bioethanol.
