Summary: | The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has taken an integrated green navy approach to conserve environment, and at the same time, to explore renewable energy by utilizing its own resources and capability. This is a noble manifestation of the RMN's commitment to the government's efforts in conserving the environment, in the interest of future generations. The focus of this study is to explore the perceptions of the naval staff towards green navy implementation. In this regard, this study aims to understand: (i) the awareness and understanding of green concepts by the naval personnel, (ii) the importance of green concepts for the environment, (iii) the responsibility of the naval personnel to the environment, and (iv) the importance of green practices for sustainability. The participants involved came from three levels: five from strategic management, 15 from the operational level, and 20 from the tactical level. Purposive sampling was applied to select the participants. The interview transcriptions were entered into the database management software, and a comprehensive data coding and identification process was conducted. The open coding resulted in 147 unique codes, but upon screening, these were further reduced to axial coding (sub-themes), and further collapsed into four themes of selective coding. The study has found that awareness, promotional activities of green navy, collaboration, cooperation, communication quality, goodwill and sustainability were some of the key influencing factors affecting the successful implementation of Green Navy. This study revealed that management from all levels need to be involved in order to ensure the success of the green concept, based on the guidelines provided. The findings also showed that green management is an opportunity to project a deep foundation for the organisation’s image as well as its sustainability, especially when green technology has been widely disseminated in government agencies. This study also offers a model which could be used as a measure to understand the importance of green concepts which are relevant to organisational sustainability.
