Microwave-metal-assisted pyrolysis (MMAP) is a technique that exploits microwave-metal interaction to enhance the quality of pyrolysis products. Despite the misconception that metals cannot couple well with microwaves and are hazardous when heated in a microwave field, research studies have shown that the presence of metals can generate a large amount of heat, which aids the heating of pyrolysis feedstock. This technique promotes pyrolysis over many materials, such as plastics, biomass, and tire powders. This work discusses the effect of several MMAP parameters such as microwave power, metal species, metal shape and quantity on the product yield, and distribution based on reported studies. This paper also addresses the challenges of MMAP and proposes some suggestions on the future outlook of this process. To conclude, this review discusses the available information and data on MMAP to enrich the knowledge in this field.
