Summary: | Introduction:
This study is to quantitatively investigate the dimensions of the sella turcica in southern Chinese.
Materials and Methods:
This retrospective study consists of 582 (277 females and 305 males) lateral cephalometric radiograph randomly selected from 12-year old school children in Hong Kong without history of craniofacial surgey, trauma, syndromes, cleft lip or palate. Image J software (version 1.45) was used for linear measurements. The dimensions of sella turcica were measured using the Frankfurt plane as horizontal reference direction. The area of the sella turcica was also investigated.
Results:
The dimension of sella turcica in southern Chinese in antero-posterior direction was 9.76 (SD1.54) mm. Sella Height Anterior (SHA), Sella Height Median (SHM) and Sella Area (SA) were significantly higher in females by 0.53mm, 0.24mm and 3.48mm2, respectively.
Conclusion:
The results of this study furbish quantitative reference that is useful for evaluation of the sella turcica dimensions in the southern Chinese population. This may aid in early diagnosis of various pathological conditions such as pituitary gland tumors.
