Description
Summary:English Teaching for Science and Mathematic (ETeMS) programme has been proposed as an urgent interim measure to ensure that teachers of mathematics and science (MST) will have basic capacity to use English as the medium of instruction. The overall aim of ETeMS programme is to enhance the English language skills of MST as well as the use of ICT as an instructional tool in the classroom for a more effective way of teaching science and mathematics. The objectives of this study were to determine the perception of MST towards the usefulness of training provided by the ETeMS programme, to determine the perception and attitude of MST towards the use of ICT for improving the teaching of mathematics and science and to determine the practice of MST on the use of ICT in schools. This is a cross sectional study conducted from August to September 2005. The study involved all teachers teaching science and mathematic in form one, two and three in secondary schools in PPD Kuala Krai, Kelantan. A questionnaire was used as a research tool and the data was analyzed using SPSS software. Seventy-eight MST successfully responded to the questionnaire and the analysis showed that majority of MST in PPD Kuala Krai have good perception in the usefulness of ETeMS training. We also found that they have good attitude towards the use of ICT for teaching of Science and Mathematics. However, we found that they are still a high number of MST having negative perception on the use of ICT for teaching of Science and Mathematics. MST have frequent usage of specific software but rarely for other ICT facilities.
