Description
Summary:Myricetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid that is found in berries, fruits, vegetables, herbs, tea and wine while mahanimbine are natural compounds isolated from Murraya koenigii. Myricetin has been demonstrated to possess antioxidative properties and it is also a potent anticarcinogen and antimutagen. Mahanimbine also showed antioxidant activity and high degree of radical-scavenging properties. Both compounds act as a direct antioxidant that scavenges free radicals which play important role in the pathogenesis of carcinogenesis. MTT assay was carried out to determine the percent of viability of cancer cell and normal cell when treated with myricetin and mahanimbine. ELISA plate reader at 570nm was used to measure absorbance for cells that are treated with myricetin and mahanimbine. From the data obtained, these compounds were shown to exert cytotoxic effect against brain cancer cell line SF295 with an IC50 value of (myricetin=12μg/mL) and (mahanimbine=1.5μg/mL). Eventhough these compounds were very cytotoxic against cancer cell line SF295 but they are not selective towards normal cell and cancer cell. Therefore further investigation on chemical structure modification can be done to improve its selectivity and cytotoxic effects.
