Summary: | The aim of conducting this research was to investigate the relationship between working environment and job satisfaction among employees. In this research, working environment included three factors which were working hours, workplace relationship, and esteem needs. Longer working hours, poor relationship between supervisor and co- workers, and low self-esteem made employees less attentive to their job thus reduced their job satisfaction. Besides, there was a lack of conclusive evidence on the correlation between the three variables to job satisfaction. This research used correlational research design to measure the relationship between working environment and job satisfaction among employees. There were 83 valid questionnaires for this study. The correlational analyses showed that the working environment correlated to employees’ job satisfaction. Workplace relationship and job satisfaction had a positive, strong, and significant correlation while esteem needs and job satisfaction indicated a positive, medium and significant correlation. Although the correlation between working hours and job satisfaction was positive, it was a low and insignificant. This study proved that better working environment contributed to employees’ job satisfaction in the organization. This study also provides some insights to the organization by encouraging positive relationship at the workplace and also providing paths to employees who are seen as having high potential to bring value to the organization. Although this study is a replication from
previous studies, it presented different findings from the perspective of government servants at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) which is valuable to the existing body of knowledge. |
