Description
Summary:This study concentrates on the attitude of the pupils of SK. Kebor Ayer, Kuala Terengganu towards reading academic materials. It is to confirm that their reading attitude contributed to the lack of interest in reading academic books. Reading is a popular activity among pupils during their free time in school and at home. Surprisingly, the real problem reveals that academic books are not the pupils’ favourite . They prefer to read magazine, comics and tabloid. 41 pupils were chosen from Year 5 and 6. Ten teachers including the headmaster in this school were the respondents. They include both male and female gender. The subjects were chosen at random. Based on the findings of this survey, most of the pupils prefer non-academic materials to academic books. Most of them did not feel the joy of reading when they choose the academic books. This scenario is really a burden because they have to be forced to read these academic materials for their exam. Reading and learning should go parallel on until death. Reading has to start from the beginning when the foetus is still in the womb. The mother should read to the baby. The teachers, parents and the pupils themselves should play their own role in developing their attitude towards reading especially academic books. Motivation and encouragement in the form of rewards and activities have been done to attract and enhance the pupils’ positive attitude towards reading academic books. It is hoped that it will bring them positive changes and realization of the importance of academic books for the success in their future.
