Spices are distinguished from herbs, which are the leaves, flowers, or stems of plants used for flavouring or as a garnish. The spice trade developed throughout the Indian subcontinent and Middle East by at earliest 2000 with cinnamon and black pepper, and in East Asia with herbs and pepper. Records show Malaysia's early beginnings as a spice route probably date from around 300 BC, when merchants and traders from India and China stopped along the Malaysian coast to trade. By 400 AD, Malacca had established itself as a key port on the spice Route.
