Problems and solutions of using monorail external fixation in the femur

Placement of the external fixator in the femur is limited because of the presence of the opposite thigh. The conventional fixator is not strong enough to resist the strong deforming forces in the thigh. The circular fixator, although stable, is bulky and interferes with daily activities such as sitt...

The conventional fixator is not strong enough to resist the strong deforming forces in the thigh. The circular fixator, although stable, is bulky and interferes with daily activities such as sitting and lying on the bed. The monorail external fixation with a sling clamps system provides enough stability and gives more comfort to the patients. The monorail external fixation is used for fracture fixation, deformity correction and bone transport. However, the monorail system is most suitable for diaphyseal fracture. In fractures near a joint, a hybrid clamp is necessary to allow the ring fixator to be connected with the monorail system. It also allows the fixator to extend across the joint. Common problems with monorail fixation are pin loosening and fracture after the removal of external fixation. This can be avoided by using the hydroxyapatite-coated screws and gradually loading the fractures by asking the patient to walk without support. 2023-11-03 Proceeding Paper NonPeerReviewed application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/107951/1/Problems%20and%20solutions%20of%20using%20monolateral%20fixation%20in.pdf application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/107951/2/Scientific%20Program%20-%2020231102.pdf application/pdf en http://irep.iium.edu.my/107951/13/world%20medical%20reports.jpeg Mohd Yusof, Nazri (2023) Problems and solutions of using monorail external fixation in the femur.
