Information Resources Research and development (R&D) and commercialization (C) of R&D results play an important role in producing outstanding scientific, technological, and innovation assets for socio-economic development. As new technology comes in together with new kind of hurdles faced in the process for national development, the R&D&C areas must be dynamic and current in bringing significant impact to the nation. Therefore, the MRDCS document; which is one of the main national references on research implementation is reviewed regularly. The main expectation is twofold - to guide researchers on their research focus which is aligned with the national socio-economic objectives, and to guide the measurement and analysis of research performance undertaken in Malaysia. By this means, the MRDCS (Version 6) document is reviewed. Triangulation is conducted to ensure the output is valid. The national policy documents namely Shared Prosperity Vision 2030; National Policy on Science, Technology and Innovation Policy; 10-10 MySTIE Framework; and the 12th Malaysia Plan (draft) are the main references in setting the socio-economic objectives and the fields of research. The review process also involved experts from universities, research institutes, government agencies, statutory bodies, and non-government agencies in providing inputs in series of focus group discussions. Several major international documents namely Frascati Manual 2015, UN Sustainable Development Goals 2006, Australian Standard Research Classification (ASRC) 1998 & 2008, Australian New Zealand Research Classification 2020, Korean Research and Development Classification 2014, Japan Standard Industrial Classification 2007 become the benchmark in the process of upgrading and development of MRDCS V7. It is expected that all research institutes, public and private sectors, would find this new 7th Edition of MRDCS beneficial and valuable as the major reference for impactful R & D & C to support socio-economic development of the nation.
