Civil engineering (General) An intimate knowledge of available disinfection processes is a prerequisite in selecting the most appropriate system. This report is to decide on an in-situ chlorine generation and its effectiveness to be use in water disinfection. This technology is to eliminate the hazards of transportation and storage. Also this alternative technology is to lower the probability of workers exposure to the potential discharge of a toxic vapor cloud resulting from an attack on chlorine storage room. There are several types of disinfection that could be generated on-site which are chlorine gas, chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite. The suitable particular type of on-site generator in this report is sodium hypochlorite. The sodium hypochlorite was generated in an electrochemical cell. The electrodes used were MMO-coated titanium as the anode and titanium as the cathode. The results show that the MMO-coated titanium anode has better performance than graphite anode. The MMO-coated titanium anode was also better than Ti/RuOz anode. Under the following conditions, a concentration of as high as 45.42 gil Ch of Free Available Chlorine was obtained, surfuce area of the anode; 15 cm2 , interelectrode gap, 0.5 em; current density, 200 rnNcm2 ; concentration of NaCl aqueous solution, 2M; and time, 120 minutes.
