Summary:Out of the total world natural gas reserves, more than 40% of it are estimated to be sour that is high in hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. Sour natural gas poses bigger challenges in harvesting and processing it. In this study, steady state simulations of the natural gas production facility that uses supersonic gas separation technology of gas twister are developed using Aspen HYSYS. The simulations are used to study the total energy consumption of the topside facility that uses the Gas Twister system. The amount of hydrocarbon lost from the whole system is also being paid attention to. The total energy consumption is studied by varying the CO2 loading of the natural gas and the arrival conditions of natural gas. Four case studies are conducted in order to achieve the objectives of the research. The results of this research show some notable trends that are crucial in the removal of CO2 from sour natural gas. The production facility uses less energy for a high CO2 concentration natural gas and the arrival temperature and arrival pressure of the natural gas affects the work produced by the turbo expander.
