Description
Summary:Introduction: Surface anatomy is the study of the external features of the human body meaning not only it is used to identify structures beneath the skin but it enables the students to perform onical examinations, intenentional procedures and interprete radiological images. Since Mere is scarce evidence on the best teaching method for surface anatomy. the am of this study was to justly the need in seeking a pnme approach in teaching surface anatomy. Materials and Methods. A literature search on the importance of leammg surface anatomy was performed using Gocgle Scholar and PuhMed databaSes Results and Discussion: The declining surface anatomy knowledge in modern curriculum has resulted in procedural at surgical avers. Successful teaming of surface anatomy requres a balance between comprehension and Insuakzation Learners believed Mat mriovative approaches such as body paintmg, living anatomy model, virtual human dissector and digital X-ray are instrumental in boosting their surface anatomy skills. A study done showed an increase in undergraduate students' understanding of anatomical structures after introduction to ultrasound training as it promoted students procedural skill and their confidence level on performing clirucal procedures. The techrique of drawing anatomical structures that requires extra focus of concentration. lateral thinking and knowledge transfer skills could also result in higher understanding of the subject learned Indeed, integration of surface anatomy IA a practical course has resulted in improved knowledge, understandmg and confidence level in clinical practice. Conclusion: Surface anatomy is still relevant to produce sale doctors. Hence, roovation in surface anatomy teaching is pertinent for effective learning and contribute to competent clinical students and doctors
