| description | Green hydrogen is a promising clean energy carrier essential for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, its large-scale production faces a critical challenge: the need for a sustainable and reliable freshwater supply. Seawater desalination, particularly through membrane-based technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO), electrodialysis (ED), membrane distillation (MD) and forward osmosis (FO), offers a viable solution to address this issue. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current status, technological advancements, environmental and economic aspects of membrane-based desalination integrated with green hydrogen production. It reviews recent developments in membrane electrolysis, integration and process modeling and highlights key case studies and future plans for scaling up these technologies. Furthermore, the paper discusses the challenges of scaling, techno-economic considerations and offers policy recommendations to facilitate the integration of membrane desalination into sustainable hydrogen energy systems. |
