| Summary: | Malaysia is a multiethnic and multicultural nation that places greater emphasis on its education to propagate unity within its diversity. Recently, there has been an increasing concern with regards to the teaching of Islamic Education in schools as to whether it is able to promote values that can unite, integrate and foster good relations between Muslim and non-Muslim students. The aim of this chapter is to explore Muslims’ understanding of Islam, and how their views play a role in promoting tolerance towards others. It presents a case study of a higher education classroom in Malaysia, to illustrate how Hikmah, a pedagogy of inquiry, is used to explore students’ views about Islam and Islamic practices. The chapter concludes that when majority Muslim students realize that the origin of their views are influenced by their tradition and culture, they became more open and understanding towards other religions and culture, paving the way for them to accept and respect these differences. |
